Creo haber mencionado ya alguna vez en este espacio mi afición por Sherlock Holmes. Y aclaro (para que no reclamen luego), mi afición es por Sherlock Holmes, el personaje y no por Arthur Conan Doyle, el autor. Pues verán mis hipotéticos, pero nunca menospreciados lectores, Conan Doyle creo al personaje de Holmes en 1887 en la novela “Estudio En Escarlata” y publico 23 relatos y una novela mas hasta 1894 cuando decidió deshacerse del celebre detective que vivía en el numero 221-B de la calle Baker y lo asesino.

Resulta ser que Arthur Conan Doyle era un medico naval y su mas grande ambición en la vida era ser historiador, escribió varios libros y tratados que pasaron sin pena ni gloria por el publico, hasta que apareció Sherlock Holmes, entonces todo mundo le pedía que escribiera mas y mas, lo cual le sirvió para publicitar mas escritos históricos y otras novelas de aventuras como las protagonizadas por el Profesor George Edward Challenger (también excelentes y muy recomendables). Sin embargo la gente seguía sin aceptar del todo la faceta seria de Doyle, por lo cual decidió deshacerse del personaje que tanto tiempo le quitaba y seguir con sus otras obras. En 1894 publica “El Problema Final” donde aparece por primera vez el que seria su mas grande enemigo, el único a su altura y por ende, el único que podría darle una muerte digna: El Profesor James Moriarty. Después de este suceso la gente en las calles porto por meses moños negros guardando luto al personaje, mientras que el correo de Conan Doyle era saturado de cartas pidiendo nuevas novelas de Sherlock. En 1901 Conan Doyle publico “La guerra en el sur de África: causas y desarrollo”, libro gracias al cual le fue otorgado en 1902 el titulo de “Caballero Del Imperio Británico” y el trato de “Sir”. Al siguiente año (1903) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle por fin cedió a los miles de cartas que recibió pidiendo el regreso de Sherlock Holmes y publico 2 novelas y 33 relatos hasta 1927. Falleció en Julio de 1930 a los 71 años de edad.

Desde 1927 hasta nuestros días, el celebre personaje se ha vuelto un icono de la cultura universal, su sombrero de cazador, la pipa meerschaum y la mítica frase “Elemental Mi Querido Watson”, son mundialmente conocidos, a pesar de nunca haberlos usado en las novelas originales, sino en interpretaciones posteriores en cine y teatro.
Algunos datos curiosos sobre el personaje:
* Nació en 1854
* Era bastante misógino hasta que una mujer llamada Irene Adler lo venció en inteligencia y lo burlo. Desde entonces Holmes solo se refiere a ella como “La Mujer”.
* Sherlock tiene un hermano llamado Mycroft Holmes, el cual es mas observador e inteligente que el, tiene un puesto importante en el gobierno británico.
* Holmes tiene una adicción a la cocaína disuelta en una solución al 7%.
* El doctor Gregory House es un homenaje al detective, ambos son adictos (Vicodin y Cocaina), tienen similares apellidos (House y Holmes), ambos viven en lugares parecidos (House en el departamento 221-B y Holmes en el 221-B de Baker Street) y en un episodio House es herido por un hombre llamado Jack Moriarty.

Toda esta información viene a tema porque en estos días acabo de ver la ultima adaptación cinematográfica del personaje, una película dirigida por Guy Ritchie (Snatch) y protagonizada por Jude Law (Dr. John Watson) y Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes).
¿Que puedo decir de la película?… Esta GENIAL, tienen que verla. Provee de un aire fresco y maravilloso al personaje sin perder su esencia, pero sobre todo, logra que nos maravillemos con un personaje y una historia tan conocidos y a la vez tan nuevos, que nos deja el sentimiento familiar de reencontrarnos con un viejo amigo.
Al final, despues de todo, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ya es historia (Fiel a su pasión) y Sherlock Holmes esta mas vivo que nunca. Una ironía mas de la vida, tan grande como la Hipopotomonstrosesquipedaliofobia misma.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
